Habiter en bord de mer
Living by the Mediterranean, year-round
Beyond the holiday postcard, coastal homes carry damp winters, summer crowds, and municipal rhythms that shape daily life. We report on what it really takes to live here.
Seasons and climate
Two seasons, one coastline

Winter
Damp and quiet
Off-season months bring humidity and condensation into poorly ventilated rooms. Regular airing, heating schedules, and checks on gutters and rendering help keep a home sound.
Summer
Peak and pressure
Peak season fills roads, bins, and beaches, and it can stretch local services. Residents often plan errands, deliveries, and repairs around the influx.

Practical adaptation
Living with water, wind, and salt
Water conservation starts with the household: collecting rainwater for gardens, fitting flow restrictors, and choosing appliances with low consumption. In many coastal communities, water supply and drought rules are set locally, so checking current municipal guidance is worth the time.
Gardens adapt too. Native and drought-tolerant plants such as lavender, rosemary, and cistus need little irrigation and tolerate salt spray, while windbreak hedges of local shrubs protect terraces and reduce sand and dust on windows.
